GRE General Test is one of the key criteria among other requirements that Universities use to evaluate your application. It measures your skills acquired during your school and college education.  A good GRE score can sometimes help compensate marginally lower grades in your previous qualifications.

GRE Structure

Analytical Writing – 2 essays (30 minutes each) measures analytical reasoning and analysis skills. There are no right or wrong answers to the questions in this section comprising of one Issue Essay and the other Argument Essay. This test is marked by 2 or 3 readers.

Verbal Reasoning – 2 sections of 20 questions each (30 minutes for each section). Questions in each section are a mix of reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence.

While reading comprehension questions can be multiple choice, single answer questions or select in passage the text completions questions will have one, two or three blanks with the question.

Quantitative Reasoning (also known as GRE Math) – 2 sections of 20 questions each ( 30 minutes for each section) consists of multiple choice quantitative analysis and user input questions. Test you on Algebra, Arithmetic, plan and co-ordinate geometry, probability and statistics.

Experimental Section : You may have either a Verbal or math section included in the exam on an experimental section however you are not likely to know which of the two identical sections is experimental.

GRE Scoring

The GRE General test consist of 6 sections with a break of 10 minutes after the first 3 and the test duration is 3 hours and 45 minutes. This is a Modified Computer Adaptive Test (CAT).

You can move around with a given section in each of the 4 math and verbal section that means you can choose to answer some questions immediately and mark some for review or skip a question. But once you submit the section it will be scored immediately and you cannot return to it.

The system calculates an internal score, when the next section of that type (verbal or math) comes up the difficulty level will be adjusted based on how well you performed on the previous section of that type.

Quantitative and Verbal reasoning sections of the test are scored on a range from 130 to 170 points each for a total of 340 points. For the Analytic Writing section scores range from 0 to 6.0.
