Why study in Australia?

Its not just a "Land of Kangaroos and Koalas" but a great sporting nation with cosmopolitan culture and living standards that can be rated among the best in the world.

Its a continent and a country at the same time with rich natural resources and a flourishing economy making it the 6th largest country in the world. Vast majority of population is concentrated on the southern coast of the country.

Australia is home for some of the best education institutions in the world.  The Australian government invests a lot in the education sector as it is the 3rd biggest contributor to the nation’s economy.

Applying to study in Australia?

Application process is straight forward to most of the Universities and TAFE colleges that offer vocational qualifications in Australia. Australia offers wide variety of courses with flexible delivery methods. However an international studying in Australia can only enrol on a full time course.

One would need a personal statement, reference letters and copies of all the education certificates to make an application to a university. IELTS is mandatory for visa purpose and strongly recommended inspite of some universities waving the requirement.

Typical start dates for courses in Australia are in February, July and November. Most programmes start in February and July and options available in November are selective.

Working in Australia and Stay back Options

Australian Student visa allows students to work upto 40 hours a fortnight during term time and upto 40 hours per week during vacations.

Students who have successfully completed a course with duration of two years or more would qualify to apply for Post Study Work (PSW) rights.

Accommodation & Living Cost

Students have choice of staying in University accommodation or private accommodation. It is important to understand that the university accommodation may appear to be more expensive than the private accommodation  but the cost of private accommodation does not include bills.

The prescribed living expenses per year as per the Visa requirement is $19,830 (subject to change)

On Campus accommodation can range from $70 to $250 per week and private accommodation from $50 to $200 per week. In case of private accommodation this excludes cost of gas and electricity ($60 to $100 per month in addition to transport and entertainment costs of $80 to $200 per month.

Tuition Fees

Typical tuition fee for an Undergraduate degree programme is $20,000 to $32,000 per year and the postgraduate fee can range from $20,000 to $35,000 per year. Doctoral Degrees can cost from $15,000 to $35,000 per year.

Merit based scholarships are offered by many universities and some institutions offer early bird discounts as well on paying the full fee in advance or before a set date. However this will vary from one institution to the other.

Immigration & Visa

Australia boasts of a robust visa application process and needs students to follow Simplified Student Visa Framework (SSVF). Every student need to prove that they are a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) compliant.

The documentation requirement for the student visa is also based on universities assessment level categorised as AL1, AL2 or AL3 matched with the assessment level of student’s country of origin.

You need to budget for living expenses of $19,830 and the tuition fee as prescribed on your electronic Certificate of Enrolment (eCoE) in addition to travel fare of $2000.

All students need to obtain Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) prior to applying for the visa and also need to undergo Pre- Medical test at an Australian High Commission empanelled hospital. List of hospitals can be checked at the link:
